Shibori originated in early Japan and was developed to color and pattern fabrics. The Japanese developed many intricate variations to produce finely detailed designs. Modern tie- dye's roots are in simplified shibori techniques.
The techniques include pleating, folding, clamping, wrapping, tying, and sewing the fabric to create resists and patterns when dyed. The design is somewhat planned but the result is always serendipitous. I make scarves, shawls and jackets from the shibori fabric I create.
